How many reunions should a school have had in 90 years? An old copy of the PCHS (Port Credit High School) High Light newspaper mentioned that the first group of alumni gathered in 1945 at someone’s home. Might that have been the first reunion – the 25th? The first full reunion for Port Credit Secondary School was in 1970, celebrating 50 years. During the open house held on the Saturday of the event, there was an announcement of an alumni choir forming in the auditorium. “Anyone interested should report to the stage now!” Since then, it's become a bit more organized. In 1980, a schedule was set up so that on the Friday night, those involved in school sports would meet at a location away from the school site. Saturday would feature an open house, including the decade rooms (which feature PCHS memorabilia and souvenirs from their respective decades). On the Saturday night, a gala dinner/dance would be held. For the last few reunions, this final event was held at the Marco Polo Hotel, the Capital Banquet Centre, the Trillium Banquet Hall and the Delta Meadowvale Inn. In 1990, the sports night was shifted to a Thursday to make a talent night possible at the school. CHUM was brought in to stage a sock-hop in the cafeteria. A liquor license was not available, as current students at PCSS were performing along with alumni. In 1995, the now-combined Friday alumni talent show/pub night included the highlights of opera-singer Maurice Brown singing “If I Were a Rich Man”, and The Chords (from 1958) reuniting in the cafeteria pub. The second pub in the main gym was packed with alumni from every decade. At the 80th reunion in 2000, a band called Blue Rhythm reunited...and they hadn’t played together since 1951! Port Credit is a very beloved school. In its 90 years, it has presided over three different locations. It began as a public (and continuation) school on the current site of Forest Avenue Public School in 1917, before it was torn down in 1974. In 1930, the new Port Credit High School opened on the current site of Mentor College on Forest Avenue. Following the fire of 1956, the outside façade of the building was re-modeled, but much of the inside of the school (including the gym and auditorium), remained as they were in the 1930's. On May 6, 7 and 8, Port Credit alumni will celebrate 90 years of fond memories and great times. A new initiative includes the Thursday night “Decade Meet and Greet on Lakeshore” event. Seven restaurants in Port Credit have been designated as Host Venues, including: 1930's/1940's – Snug Harbour (14 Stavebank Rd. South) 1950's – Lake Affect (1 Port Street East) 1960's – The Brogue Inn (136 Lakeshore Rd. East) 1970's – Roc 'n Docs (105 Lakeshore Road East) 1980's – Ten Restaurant (139 Lakeshore Road East) 1990's – The Crooked Cue (75 Lakeshore Road East) 2000's – The Pump House Grille (40 Lakeshore Road East) Alumni can gather at the restaurant and rekindle friendships with other alumni who attended Port Credit when they were students. There will no cost for the Decade Meet & Greet, but guests must RSVP by e-mailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Friday night will include the alumni pub and talent night at the school. On Saturday, the open house includes a welcoming ceremony, former staff brunch and a barbecue. The Oasis Convention Centre will host the gala dinner/dance Saturday night, titled “Linking Friendships, Memories and School Support”. For full details and to register, please visit www.pcssreunions.com or phone 905-274-6131. The organizers are expecting close to 2,000 alumni for this reunion, and they travel from quite a distance. As the first high school in Mississauga, they expect no less! |
