The "coming together" of cultures, the "gathering" of individuals, the Maanjidowin of the people...these phrases will be heard often when the Maanjidowin Festival comes to J.C. Saddington Park on July 17 & 18! Maanjidowin is the Ojibwa word for "gathering". Maanjidowin (the Ojibwa word for "gathering") celebrates over 200 years of history in Mississauga in 2010 with a massive two-day festival, featuring live entertainment, special ceremonies and more. From sunrise to sunset, the Maanjidowin will take over Misssissauga. Events include a sunrise ceremony, traditional pow-wow, Metis fiddlers and jiggers, Inuit throat singers, teaching circles, demonstrations, artists, a children's circle and much more. Foods such as venison sausage, bison burgers and strawberries will also be shared, as visitors reflect on traditional land use during these two days of Aboriginal celebration. The Festival will also welcome many special guests, including Chief Bryan LaForme of the Mississaugas of New Credit First Nation, Mayor Hazel McCallion and officials from the Métis Nation of Ontario. Bridging the past with the current with the theme "Friendships That Transcend Time," the festival provides an excellent opportunity for Mississaugans of all cultures to take part in an event that brings people together in an inclusive way. Admission is free, so bring all your friends, family and neighbours – and make this community event one to remember! Heritage Mississauga is a strong partner in the development of programs to further awareness of Aboriginal heritage in our community, and is committed to making this annual event the preeminent aboriginal celebration within Southern Ontario.
