Bring out your pooches and pledges!

The Etobicoke Humane Society will hold the 19th annual Merle Blain and Bruce Harvey Memorial Dog Walk-A-Thon fundraiser on Sunday, September 12 at Etobicoke's West Deane Park, featuring fun and excitement for residents and dogs of all ages!

Take part in entertaining and valuable demonstrations for pet guardians, conducted by two groups well respected in Toronto's dog community. Who's Walking Who will be providing a "variety show" with a focus on pet behavior, showing people how to work with their dog and demonstrating positive reinforcement training. All About Dogs will also be offering agility and introductory basic pet CPR demonstrations. The event also includes a BBQ (with vegetarian options), exhibitors, activities for children and a silent auction including a one year membership donated by Premier Fitness/Mademoiselle Spa.

"The Dog Walk-A Thon is an important and entertaining fundraiser for our all-volunteer charity," said William Blain, President of the Etobicoke Humane Society. "It is through events like these and community support that we can continue caring, protecting and advancing the welfare of animals."

The fundraiser will be held on the west side of Martingrove Road (north of Rathburn and south of Eglinton). Registration starts at 11 a.m., and the walk starts at noon.

The Etobicoke Humane Society is an independent, all-volunteer registered charity that has served the Etobicoke community for over 20 years by operating strictly on donations and their own fund-raising efforts. Port Credit's 175th Anniversary PDF  | Print |  E-mail

clarke-hallMay the light never fail.

In 2010, Port Credit will celebrate its 175th birthday with a year-long celebration, featuring exciting events for all ages.

Built in 1835 as a trading and fishing center at the mouth of the Credit River, the “village by the lake” has been a central hub for business and tourism in Mississauga.

The anniversary is chance to commemorate the village's past, present and future, said Lydia Ordonez-Niles, the chair of the organizing committee. The whole community has come together to make this year’s festivities a reality.

“We have so much community spirit here in the village,” said Ordonez-Niles. “When you’re planning a massive year-long celebration like this, people are thrilled to be a part of the experience.”

Some of the planned events happening this year include exhibits and presentations on P.C.’s past by local historians, several city-wide contests, an anniversary celebration day that will be held on July 1 and a time capsule that will be buried at the end of the year at the Memorial Arena, to be unearthed in 2035.

The festivities kicked off on January 9 with an old-fashioned pond hockey tournament at the outdoor skating rink in Memorial Park. Teams wearing retro-style “P.C. 175” jerseys took to the ice and competed in a series of thrilling, fast-paced matches.

P.C. Memorial Arena will also hold its final two public skates before it closes for renovations on Friday, March 12 from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. and Sunday, March 14 from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

The anniversary celebrations will enrich the community and make people more aware of what Port Credit has to offer, said Ordonez-Niles. “2010 will be a very memorable year,” she said.

‘The Producers’: Burnhamthorpe Auditorium, April & May PDF  | Print |  E-mail

the-producersThe Producers, the winningest Broadway musical in history, comes to the Burnhamthorpe Auditorium in April and May for a limited run of shows!

In the play, a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history, thereby bilking their backers out of millions.

One thing goes awry, though: the show is a smash hit!

With a truly hysterical book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (Annie) and music and lyrics by Brooks, The Producers skewers Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an “equal opportunity offender”!

Four evening shows will be held on April 23, 24, 30 and May 1 and 7 at 8 p.m. Matinees will also be held on April 25 and May 2 and 8 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $24 ($21 for groups of 10+ people) and $18 for youths.

The Burnhamthorpe Auditorium is located at 500 The East Mall in Etobicoke (north of Burnhamthorpe Rd. at Hwy. 427).

For tickets, call 416-248-0410 or visit www.e-m-p.net.
